Reliance Communications Shares Plunge To Record Low On Debt Concerns -29 May, 2017

The launch last year of rival Reliance Industries' new Jio 4G service with free voice and data services has forced other networks to come up with cheaper plans of their own.

Reliance Communications shares fell as much as 20 per cent to an all-time low on Monday, after it reported a Rs. 966 crore fourth-quarter loss and worries about its heavy debt load resurfaced. The company, controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani, over the weekend posted its second straight quarterly loss, dragged down by a price war in what is the world's second-biggest mobile market by number of users. The Economic Times newspaper on Monday reported that the company had delayed repayment of loans to more than 10 banks. Reliance Communications declined to comment on the Economic Times report.

The launch last year of rival Reliance Industries' new Jio 4G service with free voice and data services has forced other networks to come up with cheaper plans of their own, squeezing margins and in some cases dragging down sales, with bigger rivals Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone India also suffering from the cut-price competition.

In its quarterly results statement, however, Reliance Communications said that "pending formal confirmation by the lenders for waiver of certain loan covenants", some loan amounts would continue to be classified as non-current liabilities. The company plans to repay Rs. 25,000 crore worth of loans to its lenders with proceeds from its deals with Aircel and Canada's Brookfield Infrastructure, the newspaper cited a company spokesperson as saying.   

Reliance Communications is merging its wireless business with rival Aircel, and is also selling a 51 per cent stake in its tower business to Canada's Brookfield Infrastructure Group for Rs. 10,000 crore.  Following a sell-off last week due to debt concerns, shares in Reliance Communications plunged further on Monday, falling to their maximum daily limit and hitting a record low of Rs. 20.60. They were down 13 per cent in early noon trade.  A sell-off in its 2020 bonds also resumed on Monday with yields spiking to 17.2 percent after ending at 12.3 percent last week.

Indian ADRs – Tata Motors closed higher by 1.39% -27 May, 2017

Indian ADRs closed with missed sentiments in the trading session of May 26.

In the IT sector, Infosys closed higher by 0.13% at USD 15.53; and Wipro closed marginally lower by 0.09% at USD 10.86.

In the Banking sector, ICICI Bank closed higher by 0.41% at USD 9.72; and HDFC Bank closed lower by 0.17% at USD 86.54.

In the other sectors, Tata Motors closed higher by 1.39% at USD 37.07; and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories closed lower by 0.69% at USD 37.28.

The S&P 500 index rose marginally by 0.75 points to finish at 2415.82. The Nasdaq Composite index advanced 4.94 points to end at 6,210.19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 2.67 points to close at 21,080.

On Friday, Nifty closed higher by 85.35 points at 9595 levels and Sensex closed higher by 278.18 points at 31028 level.

Top 5 things you should know about GST if you are an investor in Indian market -20 May, 2017

The goods & services tax (GST) has moved closer to becoming a reality by July 1, 2017. The GST Council earlier this week fixed tax rates on 1,211 items and released the final list of GST rates for 98 categories of goods.

Although the market has already priced in all the good news about GST, but successful implementation is likely to boost the confidence of investors and improve earnings growth of companies has remained flat or in single digits for the past 4-8 quarters.

Equity markets mirror the economic fundamentals and if GST is likely to add to that strength, investors have nothing to worry about.

We have collated a list of five factors which investors should know about GST and how it will impact markets:

GDP growth is always seen as the strength of any economy. India is growing at a pace of 7 percent and some experts feel that implementation of GDP could well add another 2 percent to its growth rate over a period of time.

“GST will be a big game-changer in sectors such as logistics because most companies will save 1 percent at least on logistics cost of the total cost. It will be very difficult for any company to evade GST,” Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Partner at Rare Enterprises said in an interview with CNBC-TV18.

“Compliance will bring tax efficiency and raise tax revenues. And, lastly, it will make the economy more and more digital because every return is going to be digital. I think it could raise gross domestic product (GDP) by 2-2.5 percent over a period of time,” he said

Around 80 percent of the goods will attract 18 percent or less GST against 35 percent of currently taxed at 27 percent or higher. Effectively, the ushering in of GST will help reduce the prices for the end user.

“The articles of daily usage including milk, food grains have been exempt from taxation under GST regime making it easier on the pocket of a common man,” Arun Thukral, MD & CEO, Axis Securities told Moneycontrol.

“The markets have more than welcomed the new rates under GST regime. GST is a structural reform and is expected to accelerate the pace of GDP growth of India post implementation,” he said.

RBI puts IDBI Bank under watch in view of high net NPA and negative RoA -10 May, 2017

The IDBI bank has been put under the scanner by the Reserve Bank of India. The apex bank also initiated a Prompt Corrective Action against it, said a news report.

The move that will place various restrictions on the lender including on fresh loans and dividend distribution.

"This is to inform that RBI (on May 5) has initiated Prompt Corrective Action for IDBI Bank in view of high net NPA and negative RoA (return on assets)," IDBI bank said in its BSE filing post market hours on Tuesday.

As reported by a national news agency, the gross non-performing assets (NPAs) or bad loans of the bank shot up by 80% to Rs 35,245 crore and it booked a loss Rs 2,255 crore for the December quarter and its RoA also declined to -2.32 at the end of the third quarter of 2016-17.

 “This action will not have any material impact on the performance of the bank and will contribute to improving the internal controls of the bank and improvement in its activities,” said the IDBI bank.

Meanwhile, the stock of IDBI Bank Limited was trading down by over 2% on the BSE on Wednesday.
